چکیده

Custom microsystems are expensive, innexible, and unsuitable for high-volume production. We address this problem by leveraging hardware/software co-design principles to design reconngurable composite microsystems. We partition the system design parameters into nonre-conngurable and reconngurable categories. In this way, the operational exibility is enhanced and the microsys-tems are designed for a wider range of application. In addition, the Taguchi robust design and the response surface methodologies are used to make the system robust. A case study is presented for a microvalve, which serves as a representative microelectroouidic device.

Design of reconfigurable composite microsystems based on hardware/software codesign principles

Composite microsystems that integrate mechanical and fluidic components with electronics are emerging as the next generation of system-on-a-chip. Custom microsystems are expensive, inflexible, and unsuitable for high-volume production. The authors address this problem by leveraging hardware/software codesign principles to design reconfigurable composite microsystems. They partition the system d...

Design and evaluation of a hardware/software FPGA-based system for fast image processing

We evaluate the performance of a hardware/software architecture designed to perform a wide range of fast image processing tasks. The system architecture is based on hardware featuring a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) co-processor and a host computer. A LabVIEW host application controlling a frame grabber and an industrial camera is used to capture and exchange video data with the hardware...

Hardware-software co-design: Tools for architecting systems-on-a-chip

| This paper examines the issues and progress in the design of highly integrated microelectronic systems. These microsystems rely on an array of diverse components such as processors, memory, network interfaces, graphics and DSP `cores.' In particular, we discuss problems in the combined design of hardware and software for these systems. We present a decomposition of the co-design problem, and ...

Design of a Flexible Coprocessor Unit

Todays FPGA technology allows reconngurable hardware to be integrated into standard PC hardware. A hardware like this allows for on-they reconngurable hardware. It is possible to remove and insert complete subsystems just by reinitializing the conngurable components. These systems make new demands on software that often can't be fulllled by the classical device driver concept used in todays ope...

An Evolutionary Approach to the Use of PetriNet based Models : From Parallel Controllers toHW / SW Co -

The main purpose of this article is to present how Petri Nets (PNs) have been used for hardware design at our research laboratory. We describe the use of PN models to specify synchronous parallel controllers and how PN speciications can be extended to include the behavioural description of the data path, by using object-oriented concepts. Some hierarchical mechanisms which deal with the speciic...
